Feb 2014 – Top Afrikaans Artist Recording 2nd Album

I’m delighted and proud to announce that Vonk Musiek’s artist Gert Koevert has begun work on his yet-untitled second album at Rapacious Records.

I got to know Gert very briefly in 2012 while he was finishing up his first CD “Geseeld” at Blomhuis Studios– I got involved very late in the project so was unfortunately not able to have any creative or musical direction, as I was essentially overseeing final mixes and adding a few guitar parts here and there.

Gert is a hugely talented singer, songwriter and lyricist, and it’s a privilege to be collaborating with him on a project from the ground up. The album’s coming together very quickly – in three short weeks we’ve already completed seven songs, all of which have been not only approved by Vonk but have all been suggested as singles. We’re hoping to have the album pre-produced by the end of February, and tracked, mixed and mastered by April.

There's hope for South African music

I’ve been a fully professional musician since November 1991 – and prior to that, music was and still is the only thing I know, love or even really care about. I’m primarily a guitar player – this is a gift I inherited from my father (who in my opinion is still the greatest guitarist on earth!), and I’ve been playing one ever since I could pick one up.

I’m also a drummer, a bassist and a little bit of a keyboardist. But the greatest gift I own is my ability to instinctively know how a song should be constructed, arranged and how it should sound, and to transform exactly what the composer or band envisaged into an actual tangible recording, This is my definition of PRODUCTION, and this is what I love doing. I can also write songs, I can rewrite and reconstruct songs to work hooks harder. I can do this in virtually any genre.

I spent 19 years composing music to specific and often challenging briefs in the Advertising and Television industry – so I can also write jingles…or as I prefer to say “music for commercials”. I’ve done TV logo/theme music, audio design, post-production and all kinds of studio audio engineering. I even wrote all the soundtrack music for a 26-hour drama series. In fact, probably not a day goes by where you don’t hear something I’ve composed, somewhere.

So given all of this, why am I back working in small studios with anyone from garage bands to high-profile recording and session artistes?

Because that’s what I love to do – to transform someone’s dream to be a singer into a tangible, physical CD … or to turn a garage band or jam session into a great-sounding recording. To get a mix from “oh which South African engineer did this” to “wow – who’s this international band”?

I truly believe that no matter who you are, how experienced or not, a dedicated, reliable and passionate person has to be on board … someone who really does care about the music, and who really can deliver.

Currently, one of the studios I’m involved with is a new studio called Rapacious Records, neatly tucked away on a very tranquil and beautifully landscaped property in Mayville, Pretoria.

More than that, the studio is equipped with all the necessary hardware and software

to literally record anything. And the results we’re getting are starting to speak for themselves.

April 2014 – Gert Koevert's Oppad is in the can!

I'm very proud to announce that Gert Koevert's newest album, Oppad, is in the can and ready to make serious waves on the South African music scene. It was an absolute pleasure working with Gert and his dynamic team of managers and promotional staff. A huge thanks to Dorothy Labuschagne at Ozaz Entertainment, Andre van Staden at Custom Events and Kobie at Vonk Music for their continuing support throughout this project.

I'm looking forward to working with Gert, Dorothy, Andre and Kobie in the future - I foresee more great South African music and quality production coming our way. Gert's album will be available in shops from June so be sure to catch your copy.
